#Introduction Hi #fediverse ! We’re the European Southern Observatory, and we design, build and operate ground-based telescopes.

One of them is our Extremely Large Telescope, currently under construction in #Chile. It will have a 39 m mirror, and its rotating enclosure will weigh 6100 tonnes, or about 700 mastodons!

We’re looking forward to chatting with all of you about #astronomy

An artist's view of Ho'oleilana. The three-dimensional shell enclosed by the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation is colorized in reddish/orange/brown color and enhanced to capture its content in terms of galaxies and to expose how it is encapsulated in the larger structure of the Cosmic Web. Galaxies are shown as luminous tiny specks. The Cosmic Web is represented as the blueish filamentary maze. This view also exposes the other structures discovered by the Cosmicflows research program: Laniakea our Home supercluster of galaxies; the South Pole Wall, a giant filament of the cosmic web that embraces the sourthernmost frontiers of Laniakea; the Dipole Repeller and the Cold Spot Repeller, two underdense regions presumably associated to two giant cosmic voids. Last but not least, a new measurement of the Hubble Constant is obtained by analyzing the geometrical properties of Ho'oleilana: 76.9 (+8.2)(-4.8) km/s /Mpc

This value is consistent with other direct local probes, and further exacerbates the "Hubble tension" in the ΛCDM model.

The cosmography of Ho'oleilana is pretty amazing: its shell includes some of the largest known structures of the universe: the Sloan Great Wall, CfA Great Wall, Hercules Supercluster, Corona-Borealis Supercluster... At its core is the Boötes Supercluster.

Ho'oleilana was found unexpectedly in the distribution of galaxies of the Cosmicflows-4 Catalog, within its SDSS PV "Peculiar Velocities" subsample of early-type galaxies, derived from fundamental plane measurements.

Acoustic waves generated in the hot plasma of the early universe became imprinted in baryon fluctuations. The prediction was made in 1970 by Jim Peebles and others. Indirect evidence of the BAO phenomenom came in 2005 by observing a peak in the pair-wise separations of galaxies.
